The Legend of Zelda has become the talk of the town in the gaming space after a recent report of The Wall Street Journal claimed that the game will soon be hitting mobile phones. More reports have surfaced with speculations in tow as to when the role-playing game will come out on Android and iOS devices. Is The Legend of Zelda hitting mobile phones this year?

Release on mobile phones

Citing "people familiar with the matter", WSJ had pointed out that Nintendo has no intentions to release The Legend of Zelda on handset devices this year. The game developer could be seen to bring the mobile game franchise out in the wild early next year.

Nintendo can be recalled for its vow to fans to release mobile games derived from popular franchises each fiscal year. The Japanese firm released its first smartphone app Miitomo, a social networking tool, in March 2016; and in December of the same year, Super Mario Run came out on mobile phones, too.

Tactical RPG Fire Emblem transcended Nintendo's traditional gaming systems and was brought to Android and iOS-run devices in February 2017. On the other hand, community simulation game "Animal Crossing" is slated to hit the mobile gaming landscape in March 2018.

The Legend of the Zelda: Breath of the Wild took the gaming community by storm when it came out in March. Figures cannot deny that the latest installment of the high fantasy game received an unprecedented success, selling almost 4 million copies for Wii U and Switch.

From these developments, many are expecting that Nintendo might as well be gearing up for The Legend of Zelda, which is due to be released in 2018.
