Police are treating the case as attempted murder and have advised both of them to stay away from each other.

An Iranian man reportedly set ablaze his Filipina girlfriend following an argument in a restaurant in Japan on Friday, local media reported.

The police said the 52-year-old man poured liquid over his 36-year-old girlfriend and then set alight at the eatery in Ibaraki prefecture, located to the north of Tokyo Reports said the restaurant workers called an ambulance saying: "People are burning."

NHK, the public broadcaster reported that the couple was taken to hospital with severe burns. Both of them were unconscious.

At the time of the incident, there were several customers inside the restaurant but the reports said no one else was injured. The police are treating the case as attempted murder and they have advised both of them to stay away from each other.

Kyodo News reported that the couple was having a dispute involving their child.
