Central Java: Two dead as cigarette spark triggers fuel truck explosion

After initial investigations, it was revealed that the explosion was triggered by a spark from a lit cigarette.

A fuel truck exploded, killing two people in Semarang, Central Java, officials said on Wednesday.

The incident happened in the Terboyo industrial area where the two dead men were repairing the truck when the explosion happened. The two victims, identified Rofik (36) and Priyadi Setiawan (34), were admitted to a nearby hospital. While Rofik died on the spot, Priyadi Setiawan succumbed to injuries later in the hospital.

After initial investigations by Semarang Police crime unit, it was revealed that the explosion was triggered by a spark from a lit cigarette.

According o reports, Genuk Police head Corm. Hendrawan Hasan said: "Several witnesses said the two were working on the fuel tank when it exploded."

"We suspect someone was smoking when the incident occurred. There is cigarette ash there," said the unit head Adj. Sr. Corm. Wiyono Eko, according to The Jakarta Post.

However, reports suggest that the cause of the explosion is not yet confirmed and the police have ordered a probe into the matter.
