Overview

Sir Andy Murray enters a Grand Slam field as the top-seeded player for the first time in his career and the Brit will look to continue his good run after rising to the top of the ATP rankings in 2016.

Murray, who is eyeing his fourth major and a first title at Australia, is likely to face 17th-seed Roger Federer, who is making his comeback after a long injury layoff, in the quarter-final if both of them manage to reach the stage. While the world number one will open against Ukraine's Illya Marchenko, the Swiss legend will kick off against Jurgen Melzer.

Bidding to stop Murray's dream run is second seed Novak Djokovic, who is fresh from his success against the Brit in Qatar earlier this month. The Serb will be eyeing a record seventh title in Australia and will face Fernando Verdasco in the first round. Notably, Djokovic conceded five match points before sealing the Qatar semi-final against the Spaniard, who also knocked out Rafael Nadal from Australian Open last year.

Nadal, who is also on a comeback trail, is seeded ninth and will face Florian Mayer on the opening day. The 30-year-old was knocked out by Milos Raonic in the third round of Brisbane International earlier this month. The Canadian, who is the third seed, will also look to start the year by making a big impact in Australia.

On the other hand, defending champion Angelique Kerber is the top seed for the event the German will see stiff competition from a fit-again Serena Williams.
