South Korean girl group 2NE1 is officially disbanding. YG Entertainment announced that the group, which consists of members CL, Sandara Park and Park Bom, is splitting up after seven years.

The official statement read: "2NE1's exclusive contract expired in May 2016, and with Minzy leaving 2NE1, we have come to the decision to officially disband after extensive discussion with the remaining members."

"As 2NE1 was YG's official girl group for seven years, we cannot begin to express how we feel, but we determined that it was too difficult to continue. Rather than waiting an unknown amount of time for 2NE1's next promotions, we have decided to focus on the members' solo activities."

"We sincerely thank all the fans both in Korea and abroad that have loved the group and their music for all this time. We would like to officially announce that after last May, we resigned with CL and Sandara Park. However, unfortunately, there is no new contract with Park Bom," YG said.

Rumours about disbandment started in April after Minzy left the group, a month before her contract expired. At that time, the 22-year-old singer revealed her plans to continue as a solo artist.

She wrote a long letter on Instagram following her departure: "Hello, this is Minzy. It is with a sincere heart that I write to you all."

"First, I would like to apologize to all those who expressed shock at the news of my departure. It is after careful consideration and much deliberation that I have decided to pursue a new journey as an artist named Minzy Kong. Ever since debuting with 2NE1 at the young age of 16, I have been grateful for the wonderful memories I shared with incredible fans worldwide. These experiences were undeniably precious and I take none of them for granted. Thank you all for helping me grow as an artist."

She added: "I promise to work even harder to return before you all with an improved and more honest version of myself. Through a renewed vision and hard work, I hope to reciprocate the love, dedication, and support that you have shown me. Thank you to all the fans, family, and friends who have shown me their love and concern. I promise to return soon. Love, Minzy."
