2017 Asean Para Games: Singaporean athletes shine in Kuala Lumpur with 52 medals

Although in 2015 Asean Para Games, team Singapore had bagged more medals, this year players showed their extreme skills and qualities.

Team Singapore clinched a total number of 52 medals in 2017 Asean Para Games, including 10 gold, 18 silver and 24 bronze medals.

While Singapore stands in the seventh place on the medal tally, Indonesia achieved 251 medals and a top-most position in the list. However, there are four countries, who bagged more medals than Singapore team in 9th Asean Para Games. Malaysia has received 258 medals and the second position in the medal tally, followed by Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines and Myanmar.

Although, compared to the 8th edition of Asean Para games, Singapore bagged more medals than this year. However, para-swimmers and cyclists' showed their qualities in Kuala Lumpur and achieved 28 medals out of 52.

"The focus of this Game has been to strengthen our base of athletes and I am happy that most of our debutants medalled," Kevin Wong, chairman of the Singapore National Paralympic Council and president of the Singapore Disability Sports Council said as quoted by The Straits Times.

There are players who should be remembered for their contribution to country's medal tally in 9th Asean Para Games.

Jason Chee Weng Fai

The Singapore table-tennis player Jason Chee clinched his first ever gold medal in Asean Para Games 2017. He defeated rival Thirayu Chueawong, a Thai player in the semi-final match and then beat another Thai opponent Thinathet Natthawut by 3-2 in the gold medal game. Chee was a silver medallist in 2015 Asean Para Games and received gold in Men's Team tournament.

Toh Wei Soong

The 19-year-old Toh Wei Soong bagged three gold medals in Men 100 meter Freestyle S7, 100-meter Backstroke S7 and 50-meter Freestyle S7. He performed in previous Asean Para Games, where he claimed three gold medals in Men's 100-meter Freestyle S8, 100-meter Backstroke S8 and 50-meter Freestyle S8, including one silver in Men's 400-meter Freestyle S8.

Mohamed Ismail Bin Hussain

The 9th Asean Para Games became lucky for the tenpin bowling player Mohamed Ismail Bin Hussain, as he received two gold medals in Mixed Singles TPB3 and Mixed Doubles TPB1+TPB3. He participated in 2010 Guangzhou Asian Para Games where he claimed a bronze. Later he featured in 2011 Indonesia Asean Para Games, 2013 Prague IBSA Tenpen Bowling Open European Championships, 2015 Asean Para Games and 2015 All Japan Blind Tenpin Bowling Championships.

Emily Lee Seok Bee

In the event of Women's' individual time trial, Emily Lee Seok Bee bagged gold at Kuala Lumpur. The 47-year-old cyclist defeated her compatriot Delia Kang Ting Ling and the Malaysian Nur Azlia Syafinaz Mohd Zais to claim the gold medal in 8th Asean Para Games. She also achieved three silver medals in women's sprint, 3000-meter individual pursuit and road race. Lee also achieved bronze in women's kilometer event.

Nur Syahidah Alim

The 32-year-old Nur Syahidah Alim achieved her gold medal at Kuala Lumpur in women's individual compound open. She defeated Thai player Rhomshalee Katemongkon in semi-final and Nor Sa'adah Abdul Wahab in the gold medal match.
